Introduction

When the United Nations Organisation was first created, in 1945, the belief of the participating nations in human rights was proclaimed. The International Charter of Human Rights confirmed that these rights were at the core of the Organisation's activities and nothing has changed since.

The concept of human rights appeared long before the U.N. However, it was through the Organisation that the idea achieved official and universal recognition.

The history of human rights is quite exciting. They were deeply rooted in all the great philosophies and have always formed a basis to society's continuos struggle for liberty and equality.

The international community has developed and transformed itself a lot during the past century, but it took the painful convulsion of the 2nd World War to make humanity realise the necessity of an international ruling body to prevent such horrific things from happening again in the future. Thus, the U.N.O. was born and the amplitude of its joint effort to find universal declarations of human rights is beyond shadow of doubt. As a reference point, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted in 1948, is used. Sadly, few people realise the true extent of the effort that has been made to reach a common point of view regarding the declaration and the long journey that led to its final form.
