The 1989 Revolution

As the authority of the dictator Ceausescu became less and less categorical, the seeds of rebellion were sown. The revolution broke out on 16 th December 1989 , in Timisoara . Anticommunist marches took place and some of the main communist symbolic buildings of the town were devastated. The rebellion was brutally put down. It is said that several corpses were brought to Bucharest and incinerated to hide the atrocities. These happenings outraged the people. In the capital, thousands of citizens marched along the streets on the 21 st of December. The army tried to appease the protestants by using force. In the evening and during the night, the people in the streets were shot at. The manifestation turned into a masacre. However, force did not prevail this time. The whole country had answered the call for freedom and justice. The dictator flead with his personal helicopter. Before long he would be executed by the military forces that had turned against him, and power would be seized by a democratical alliance. It was a bloody December, but in the end the power of the people prevailed and freedom was regained. In the moths to come, a Constitution would be voted, which reexpressed the basic human rights and freedom, as well as all other principles of a true democracy, as they are stated in international treaties and conventions.
