The Struggle for Equality and Recognition in Transylvania

In the mean time, the Romanian majority in Transylvania , which was incorporated to Hungary , formed a National Romanian Party to sustain its cause in the Hungarian Parliament, slowly gaining ground towards recognition and separation. Not being able to tolerate the injustice and discrimination the Romanian community was incessantly subjected to, the leaders of the party wrote a “Memorandum” addressed to the Imperial Court in Wien. The “Memorandum”, the most significant moment of the fight for freedom in Transylvania , demanded equal rights and the improvement of the current situation of romanians, which was only seen as possible by acquiescing the Transylvanian autonomy. The Imperial Court rejected the document and accused the leaders of treason, but was later forced to acquit them due to external pressure imposed primarely by Prince Carol the 1 st .   [UP]
